The Shepherd at the Gate

A Novel of Amos

by Gideon Mercer

Biblical Fiction

Jerusalem is rebuilding the house of God. But some men are ready to burn the city down to force the promise to come true. Returned from exile, Jerusalem is still a wounded city—its temple unfinished, its people divided, and its future watched closely by Persia. Every stone lifted on the temple mount carries a dangerous question: has God truly returned to Zion? Zechariah son of Berekiah has spent years measuring ruins and burying promises. Then the night speaks. A rider among the myrtle trees. Four horns over Judah. A high priest clothed in filthy garments. A golden lampstand burning without human hands. A flying scroll of judgment. A crown that does not belong where everyone expects it to rest. As Zechariah’s visions ignite Jerusalem, powerful men begin twisting prophecy into rebellion. Zerubbabel, heir of David and governor under Persia, is pushed toward a throne he may not be called to take. Joshua the high priest must confront the shame of a defiled priesthood. And Tirzah, Zechariah’s sharp-eyed wife, uncovers corruption hidden beneath holy language before it devours the vulnerable. But the greatest threat may come from Raham, a grieving foreman whose hunger for freedom turns dangerous. He believes God’s promises must be forced into fulfillment—and he is willing to set Jerusalem on fire to prove it. In a city caught between empire and prophecy, Zechariah must learn that God’s kingdom does not rise by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord.
